How to Customise a Canva Invitation Template: Step-by-Step Guide

Never used Canva before? This step-by-step guide walks you through customising your digital wedding invitation template — no design experience needed.

How to Customise a Canva Invitation Template: Step-by-Step Guide

Canva is genuinely beginner-friendly. If you've never used it before, you'll be surprised how quickly you can customise a professional-looking wedding invitation. This guide walks you through the entire process from purchase to finished file.

What you'll need

  • A free Canva account (canva.com — sign up takes about 60 seconds)
  • Your invitation template from Gorjo Editables (the link is emailed to you after purchase)
  • Your wedding details: names, date, time, venue address, RSVP information

That's it. No design software. No prior experience required.

Step 1: Access your template

After purchasing your template, check your email for the download confirmation. Inside, you'll find a link that opens the template directly in Canva. Click it — you'll be asked to sign into (or create) your Canva account.

Once you're signed in, you'll see a prompt: "Use this template". Click it. Canva creates a copy of the template in your account, which you can edit freely without affecting the original.

Step 2: Understand the Canva editor

The Canva editor has a few key areas:

  • Canvas — the large centre area showing your design
  • Left panel — access to elements, text, uploads, and photos
  • Top toolbar — formatting options that change depending on what you've selected
  • Pages panel — if your template has multiple pages (like a full suite), they appear as thumbnails at the bottom or side

Take a moment to click around and explore before making changes.

Step 3: Edit the text

Click on any text in the design to select it. A text box will appear with the text highlighted. Simply type your replacement text.

Tips:

  • After clicking a text element, press Ctrl+A (or Cmd+A on Mac) to select all the text in that box before typing
  • Don't worry about the font or size at this stage — just get all your details entered first
  • If text overflows the box, reduce the font size using the size dropdown in the top toolbar

Fields you'll typically need to update:

  • Partner names
  • Wedding date and time
  • Ceremony venue name and address
  • Reception details (if different)
  • RSVP date and contact method
  • Wedding website URL (if you have one)
  • Dress code (if applicable)

Step 4: Adjust fonts if needed (optional)

Most Gorjo Editables templates are designed with fonts that are already included in Canva, so no downloads are required. If you'd like to change a font:

  1. Select the text element
  2. Click the font name in the top toolbar
  3. Browse or search for a font you like
  4. Click to apply

If a font shows a crown icon next to it, it requires a Canva Pro subscription. There are hundreds of beautiful free fonts available without Pro.

Step 5: Change colours (optional)

To change a colour in the design:

  1. Click the element whose colour you want to change (a shape, background, or text)
  2. Click the coloured square that appears in the top toolbar
  3. Enter your hex colour code, or choose from the colour picker

If you want to match your wedding colour palette exactly, use a tool like Coolors to generate your hex codes.

Step 6: Download your finished invitation

Once you're happy with your design:

  1. Click Share in the top-right corner
  2. Select Download
  3. Choose your file type:

- PDF Print — highest quality, best for sending to a print shop (select "Crop marks and bleed" if your printer requests it)

- PDF Standard — good for digital sharing via email

- PNG — good for sharing via text message or social media

  1. Click Download and save the file

Step 7: Print or share

Printing at home: Use the highest quality setting on your printer and cardstock paper (at least 250gsm / 90lb for best results).

Using a print service: Upload your PDF to Canva Print, Officeworks (Australia), Vistaprint, or a local print shop. Most accept PDFs with bleed.

Sharing digitally: Email the PDF or PNG directly to guests, or use a wedding website to host your invitation for easy sharing.
